GoStudyAbroad Campaign To Give Away Scholarships To College Students

By Victoria Robertson on February 23, 2016

Study abroad is oftentimes referred to as one of the most exciting, influential and breathtaking experiences you’ll have in your college career, and the importance of such adventures is finally seeing some results.

According to a recent press release, The Institute of International Education (IIE), Go Overseas and other leading study abroad and travel organizations are offering students who want to study abroad a wide array of scholarships as well as travel prizes for those who nominate them.

IIE “is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas.” The institute designs programs of study and then sets them into motion with funding from government agencies, foundations and corporations. The independent, not-for-profit organization was founded in 1919, has 19 offices and affiliates worldwide and has over 1,400 member institutions.

Go Overseas, conversely, is the leading website for programs abroad. More students use this site for travel programs than any other website in the world. The site has over 30,000 daily views and 900,000 monthly views. It rounds up evidence, brought in through reviews, interviews, articles and other features “to help people make informed and educated decisions when choosing travel programs.”

These partners both understand the value of the study abroad experience, not only during a student’s college career, but for their professional career as well. According to the press release, “studying abroad is one of the best ways you can acquire the international experience necessary to succeed in today’s global marketplace.”

More employers are beginning to look for “global talent,” and college students who studied abroad are hired much more quickly after graduation (with higher starting salaries) than those who didn’t. They are also more likely to land jobs in their field as well as less likely to be unemployed five years after graduation.

Dr. Allan E. Goodman, IIE’s President and CEO, states:

“I’m asking study abroad alumni to imagine how different their lives would be if they’d never studied abroad and then imagine the impact going abroad could have on a friend’s life if they convinced them to study overseas too. We need mentors, campus leaders, faculty and relatives, to inspire and motivate students to study abroad so that the next generation of Americans is prepared to thrive in our globalized world.”

Both Go Overseas and IIE have partnered in light of the nationwide, #GoStudyAbroad campaign the organizations (and a few other partners) launched on February 16. The campaign asks alumni of study abroad programs to “pay it forward by inspiring college students to consider and/or commit to studying abroad by the time they graduate.”

The possible prizes include a $10,000 grand prize scholarship to study anywhere in the world or any one of three $5,000 study abroad scholarships.

Interested parties can enter online at GoOverseas.com/GenerationStudyAbroad.

Upon entering the site, you will be prompted to enter your contact information as well as to explain (in 250 characters) why you’d like to study abroad and how the experience would help you reach your goals.

While college students can enter the contest directly, the campaign also urges study abroad alumni to nominate students through GoOverseas.com/GenerationStudyAbroad. As incentive? They are offering prizes, including a grand prize, round trip, international flight. The more students you nominate, the higher your chances of winning.

The #GoStudyAbroad campaign is a five-year initiative that will hopefully double the number of students who study abroad by the end of this decade.

According to Mitch Gordon, Go Overseas’ CEO and Co-Founder:

“In partnership with IIE, our goal is to connect as many of our 30,000 daily and 900,000 monthly visitors as possible with study abroad programs that will change their lives, and the lives of those with whom they interact.”

The contest runs February 16, 2016 until March 31, 2016.
